An Ordinary Guy Lands on a Very Strange Game Show
Above Average Guy is a puzzle platform game that starts with an unusual problem. The main character is sitting at home watching television when someone suddenly crashes through his roof, grabs him, and takes him to Japan. Before he has much time to understand what happened, he becomes a contestant on a strange Japanese game show.
The only way out is to complete a long series of challenges and prove that this ordinary contestant can become an Above Average Guy.
There are 43 puzzle stages to finish. Each one has its own small problem, so reaching the exit is not always as easy as walking from one side of the screen to the other.
Reach the Door in Every Stage
Most levels give the player one clear goal. Find a way to reach the exit door.
The arrow keys or W, A, S, and D control the character. Movement and jumping handle many of the early challenges, but the rules keep changing as the game continues.
One room may contain spikes that need careful timing. Another can have buttons that open the way forward. Some stages use breakable walls, disappearing platforms, dangerous floors, or other obstacles that make the obvious route impossible.
The game also surprises players by occasionally asking them to do something outside the normal movement controls. A puzzle may involve the mouse or even require typing something. Reading the messages inside a stage can provide an important clue.
Keep the Audience Watching
Above Average Guy adds an interesting scoring idea through the game-show audience. The player begins with spectators watching the performance. Making mistakes can cause people to leave. Restarting a stage, asking the announcer for a hint, or skipping a difficult puzzle can also reduce the crowd.
This means solving a puzzle is not the only goal. The player also wants to solve it cleanly enough to keep as much of the audience as possible.
Losing the entire crowd can end the game. Reaching the end with spectators still watching proves that the contestant deserves the title of Above Average Guy.
Expect a New Idea in the Next Room
The strongest part of Above Average Guy comes from not knowing exactly what the next level will ask for. Some stages test jumping. Others depend on observation, timing, experimentation, or understanding a short clue.
A solution that works in one room may have no value in the next.
That variety keeps the 43 levels from feeling like the same platform challenge repeated over and over. Above Average Guy combines simple movement with unusual puzzles, quick reactions, and a funny game-show setup. The player needs to reach each exit, keep the audience interested, and survive enough strange challenges to prove that this Average Guy is a little better than his name suggests.
