Diagonal 15 – Complete the Magic Number Square

Diagonal 15 is an educational number puzzle that challenges players to arrange the numbers from 1 to 9 inside a three-by-three grid. The goal is to make every horizontal row, vertical column, and diagonal add up to exactly 15. Each number can be used only once, so players must think carefully about where every digit belongs.

At first, the challenge may appear simple. Players can quickly create one row that totals 15, but completing the entire grid is much harder. Moving a number to fix one line may cause another row or column to become incorrect. Success requires players to consider the whole board rather than concentrating on only one calculation at a time.

Players place or rearrange the numbered tiles until all eight lines are correct: three rows, three columns, and two diagonals. A useful strategy is to begin with the centre square because it affects four different lines. Players can then look for groups of three numbers that add up to 15 and test where those combinations might fit.

There is also a helpful mathematical pattern hidden inside the puzzle. The numbers from 1 to 9 have a total value of 45. Since the square contains three rows with equal totals, each row must equal 15. In a completed standard solution, the number 5 appears in the centre, while numbers on opposite sides of the centre pair together to make 10.

Diagonal 15 encourages players to experiment instead of simply guessing once and giving up. A number can be moved, exchanged, or tested in another position until the pattern begins to make sense. Players gradually learn to check several directions after every move and notice which numbers work well together.

The game supports addition practice, number recognition, logical thinking, pattern discovery, concentration, and problem-solving. It can be especially useful for children who want a more interesting alternative to completing ordinary addition questions on a worksheet.

With simple rules but a surprisingly thoughtful challenge, Diagonal 15 provides an enjoyable way to exercise the brain. Arrange every number, check each row and column, remember both diagonals, and keep adjusting the grid until every direction produces the magic total of 15.
